Tuvalu's Prime Minister Enele Sopoaga has been appointed co-chair of a one-day UN climate summit, to be held in New York.

He has also been invited to deliver a statement at the meeting where climate change adaptation in vulnerable countries will be discussed.

The prime minister says it is an opportunity to make decisions critical for Tuvalu and other small island states.

World leaders have been invited to attend next month's summit which is a precursor to a legal agreement on climate action in 2015
