Probe into Samoa's suspended top cop ends

5:16 pm on 6 August 2014

The commission of inquiry investigating a breach of duties and lack of public confidence in Samoa's suspended police commissioner has wrapped up today.

The enquiry questioned Lilomaiava Fou Taioalo, about a number of issues, including the case of mentally ill New Zealand man Hans Dalton, who was found dead at Tafaigata prison in 2012.

In his closing submissions, the lawyer for Lilomaiava says his client did not breach any of his duties under the police act.

But our correspondent, Autagavaia Tipi Autagavaia, says the commissioner had admitted during the enquiry that there was a lapse in his duties in the execution of Tafaigata prison policies.

"According to the evidence, and witnesses said that they didn't know anything about the policies. And the commissioner when he was asked, was saying that maybe the policies were not implemented."

Autagavaia Tipi Autagavaia says the commission of enquiry is to submit it's findings to cabinet next week.
