Fiji AG appalled by Qarase comment

3:30 pm on 6 August 2014

The Fiji attorney general, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, says he wants the Electoral Commission to take action against a former prime minister, Laisenia Qarase, for his comments at a campaign meeting of the Sodelpa Party.

Mr Qarase, who is barred from standing in the election, reportedly said the number 135 to be used on the ballot paper is taken from the Quran.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum says it is an absurd statement.

He wants police to investigate the matter, adding he hopes the Electoral Commission will act to stop what, he calls, such disgraceful conduct.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum says this shows the desperation of a man who cannot stand for elections.
