American Samoa combatting chikungunya

1:00 pm on 29 July 2014

The American Samoa Government is organising a major clean up this Friday in an effort to eliminate breeding sites for mosquitoes, which are responsible for an outbreak of chikungunya virus.

The first three cases were confirmed by health officials last week.

A committee appointed by the acting governor Lemanu Peleti Mauga has held a meeting today with village mayors, county chiefs and district governors to talk about the chikungunya virus and to get their support for the clean up.

Government departments have been assigned different zones to clean up .
