SOE at CNMI utility renewed

The Governor of the Northern Marianas has extended the state of emergency at the Commonwealth Utilities Corporation.

The CUC says Governor Eloy Inos's declaration allows it to renew contracts and hire foreign expert workers to sustain the integrity of CUC's systems.

The utilities company does not have enough United States citizens or resident technical specialists to perform generation work, particularly those with experience in the type of engines CUC uses.

Governor Inos issued the declaration despite his April directive that restored the full power of the CUC board of directors.

For the last nine years, the Commonwealth's governor has assumed all powers and duties of the board of directors of CUC.
