A commentator in French Polynesia says the territory's economic decline is linked to an inability to find a source of income that matches the financial input of the French nuclear weapons testing regime.

A commentator in French Polynesia says the territory's economic decline is linked to an inability to find a source of income that matches the financial input of the French nuclear weapons testing regime.

Unemployment figures have doubled since 2007 and a record 17,400 people are now registered as job seekers.

The publisher of the Tahiti Pacificque monthly, Alex du Prel, says efforts by the new government to revive the job market have yet to bear fruit.

"We've lost our main resource, which is the nuclear testing and yet our expenses have not been diminished. France is bankrupt, too - we are going through a major crisis."

Alex du Prel says hardship for many is compounded because unlike in France there is no unemployment benefit.
