Fiji Elections Minister denies conflict of interest

7:17 am on 15 July 2014

Fiji's Elections Minister, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, says there is no conflict of interest in him being the elections minister and a political candidate for the Fiji First Party.

FBC news reports Mr Sayed-Khaiyum telling a public meeting that his roles do not overlap and it's common for elections ministers to also be party leaders, such as when Laisenia Qarase and Sitiveni Rabuka held the role.

He also says there are no strings attached to the elections office's state funding and that the elections supervisor is supervised by the electoral commission, not him.
