Nauru declares more refugees

Nauru has granted refugee status to another 26 people from the Australian run asylum seeker camps on the island.

It brings to 99 the number of refugees declared on Nauru since determinations were first handed down six weeks ago.

In total 29 asylum seekers have so far failed in their bids for refugee status.

The latest group of refugees, comprised of family groups and single men, will initially live in allocated accommodation on the island.

They are entitled to move freely around Nauru and to try to get jobs.

More than a 1000 asylum seekers remain incarcerated in the three camps on the island.
