Sport: Samoan 7s coach hopeful of Games medal

6:46 am on 9 July 2014

Samoa sevens coach Fuimaono Titimaea Tafua believes the team is much better than their performances from the last IRB World Series.

Fuimaono is a former Manu Samoa fifteens coach and was a selector during the past sevens campaign, where Samoa finished a disappointing eighth under former coach Viliamu Punivalu.

He's been appointed to the sevens role for the Commonwealth Games campaign and believes they can still contend for the title.

"Yeah that's why we are really there. We still want a medal. As you know we've never been there before but we will try our best. At the moment our sevens has been down so we are trying our best to pick up the standard - not only the fitness level but also the strength. They were far far better than the result of the last IRB circuit".

Fuimaono has included veterans Lio Lolo and Lolo Lui in an extended 14-man squad, and will announce the final team for Glasgow on Wednesday.
