Mr Dion told the Post Courier newspaper he has written to Prime Minister Peter O'Neill advising him of his intention to join.

He cites the political turmoil over the past month and the ongoing criticism of the government by his THE party colleague and former treasurer Don Polye.

The THE party is still a coalition partner of the PNC.

Mr Dion says it's painful and awkward but his move will hopefully help achieve stability in the government.
