PNG MP's "rogue police" call slammed

4:44 pm on 7 July 2014

Papua New Guinea's deputy opposition leader Sam Basil has warned that MPs shouldn't criticise the work of police investigating the prime minister, Peter O'Neill, over allegedly illegal payments to a law firm.

This comes after the member for Markham, Paul Isikel, asked the police commissioner through the local media to arrest the group of police officers who are pursuing the arrest of the prime minister.

Mr Basil has taken exception to the government MP branding these officers 'rogue policemen.'

"Those police are not rogue policemen. They are investigation officers and they've done their job for many, many years. And the way we see it now the rogue policeman would be the Police Commissioner. And I think the courts have made a decision that he must not interfere so members of parliament should stop issuing contradictory statements."

Sam Basil says he's asked that police arrest Paul Isikel for making a statement that disrupts the court process around this matter.
