A man in American Samoa who allegedly raped a woman over three years ago has only now been charged with the crime and faces a bail set at 100,000 US dollars.

Yamasaki Bernard is facing multiple charges, and if convicted, could be jailed for up to 67 years.

Court documents say the victim became pregnant due to the crime and gave birth to a baby in September 2012.

The police were not informed about the alleged rape until December last year, when an investigation began.

According to the government, the defendant is a father of six from neighbouring Samoa and a relative of the victim.
