Voter registration in Solomons ends

7:31 am on 2 July 2014

The Chief Electoral Officer in Solomon Islands says the country's voter registration exercise has been completed with 287,000 people on the provisional list.

But Polycarp Haununu says about 6,000 people have been found to have registered more than once and will be taken off the final list.

Mr Haununu says the new biometric registration system has reduced instances of registration fraud because it's able to be detected more easily.

"I think the biometric system is better than the one which we used to have because we can be able to have only one person, or one name, on the list for the coming general elections because those double registrants will be objected to by the commission."

Polycarp Haununu says a date for the election is yet to be decided, but one must be held before the end of the year.
