One of the organisers of a workshop designed to assist female candidates prepare for the upcoming election in Fiji says effective campaign strategies are a focal point.

The Fiji Women's Forum is running a Candidate Capacity Strengthening Workshop in Suva this week, after being given approval by the Supervisor of Elections.

Sharon Bhagwan Rolls says around 21 women are participating, including several candidates from political parties, and women who are thinking about entering local government.

She says it's the first time they've been able to bring women together from different political parties in years.

"Regardless of the political spectrum you stand on, you are working together for gender equality. And it's finding that there are some very common challenges so one of course is to also campaign well enough and to garner the support to get elected into parliament because women of Fiji don't have any affirmative action."

Sharon Bhagwan Rolls says limitations on campaign fundraising will also test female candidates.
