Vanuatu MP warns over power bills

2:21 pm on 30 June 2014

A Vanuatu MP has raised concerns over the electricity supplier, accusing the company of estimating his electricity bill as workers were too afraid to enter his property and check his meter.

The Opposition Whip, Willie Jimmy, described his Unelco bill as "daylight robbery", after he was charged over 500 US dollars.

He says the company's staff were too afraid to enter his property because of dogs, but says he hasn't had dogs on his property since July last year.

Mr Jimmy has called on customers to check their bills, but sources from Unelco say it is company policy to estimate the bill whenever it is deemed impossible to access a customer's meter.
