PNG Ombudsman concerned by govt actions

3:45 pm on 27 June 2014

Papua New Guinea's Ombudsman Commission has warned leaders about the recent "turn of events'' in PNG politics.

PNG Loop reports Chief Ombudsman Rigo Lua and Ombudsman Phoebe Sangetari as saying they are "extremely concerned'' with the government's decision to disband the country's anti-corruption agency Taskforce Sweep.

This followed Taskforce Sweep's referral of the prime minister Peter O'Neill for arrest in relation to his alleged role in illegal state payments to a law firm.

Mr O'Neill has also subsequently made controversial changes in the police hierarchy and sacked the minister for justice and attorney-gneral Kerenga Kua.

The Ombudsman Commission is particularly worried about these moves and the violation of a lawful court order.

It says that through some of the recent actions by the executive, leaders risk prosecution for misconduct in a Leadership Tribunal.
