Fiji launches voter awareness

2:29 pm on 17 June 2014

Fiji's Elections Office says that of the 554,000 registered voters, about 240,000 are under the age of 35.

And the Fiji Times reports the Office saying that 28 per cent of the country's registered voters will have a chance to vote for the first time, when the scheduled election goes ahead on the 17th of September.

This comes as the Elections Supervisor Mohammed Saneem launched a voter awareness campaign at Suva's Civic Centre on Monday.

Mr Saneem says with the size of the block that is internet aware, the Elections Office would make use of social networks.

Electoral Commission chairman Chen Bunn Young says the awareness programme is important.

He says the Commission believes voter education is as important as the act of voting itself.
