The Asian Development Bank is to help the Solomon Islands Government boost energy access and renewable energy generation in the capital of Malaita province, Auki.

An assistance package will includes a US$6m loan and US$6m grant.

The ADB says the project will help the Solomon Islands Electricity Authority install hydropower generation to replace diesel generation in the third-largest load center in Solomon Islands, and extend the distribution grid.

Electricity Authority staff will also be trained in the operation of hydropower plants.

The project will include training newly connected households on options for electricity based income generation, electricity safety, and household budget management.
