Papua New Guinea's National Airlines Employees Association says members are planning to strike over Air Niugini's decision to lay off 250 staff.

The job cuts were announced last week during an open forum held by employees of Air Niugini in response to media reports that the company was planning to lay off 10 percent of its work force.

The president of the association, Theodorah Sapuri, told the Post Courier that cutting jobs is part of Air Niugini's plan to minimise costs.

She says members have asked management to reconsider its decision and respond in seven days or workers will strike.

There are more than 2400 employees currently working in PNG.

The Post-Courier spoke to the airline's management who said all employees across the board will be affected, including expatriates.
