Sport: Fiji Rugby Union AGM unconstitutional

1:15 pm on 9 June 2014

The Fiji National Sport Commission has ruled that last month's Fiji Rugby Union AGM in Nadi was unconstitutional.

The FRU's constitution states that a quorum at a General Meeting of the Council Meeting required at least 40 delegates of affiliated unions.

The Commission has ruled that there was no quorum and any resolutions and decisions made at the meeting, held on May the 31st, are deemed to be null and void.

The Secretariat of the FRU Council has confirmed, in writing, that the information previously provided that there was a quorum was incorrect.

Fiji Prime Minister Rear Admiral Frank Bainimarama had been elected President of the Fiji Rugby Union at the AGM, replacing Ratu Sikeli Tasere who died last year.

However following the Commission's ruling, the role becomes vacant with the Board elected at last year's AGM in 2013 in Suva deemed to remain in their roles.

The FRU Board says it will call a General Meeting in the near future.
