Sport: Fiji Pearls not taking history for granted

12:08 pm on 3 June 2014

The Fiji Pearls may have won the past four Pacific Netball Series titles, but coach Julie Hoornweg says this year is a clean slate.

The 2014 Series gets underway this afternoon with Fiji taking on the Cook Islands and Papua New Guinea up against Samoa.

Each team will play six games across six days with the top two qualifying for next year's World Cup in Sydney.

Fiji have been tipped by rival coaches as the team to beat once again but Julie Hoornweg says nothing is guaranteed.

"Papers over here are saying Samoa are the favourites and the papers back home in Fiji are saying Cook Islands are favourites so no one has picked us as the favourites to win. You can win four of the last four but that means nothing when you take the court tomorrow. You've got to be prepared to do the hard work, make the sacrifices and put the performance out on court otherwise history doesn't put a skirt on and doesn't come out to play, you've got to do it yourself."
