Kiribati government debies role in suspension

3:26 pm on 30 May 2014

The Kiribati government has denied reports that it is instructing the Broadcasting and Publications Authority to suspend the editor of Te Uekera newspaper, Ueretan Bauro.

The President's Office has told the Kiribati Independent that it lodged a complaint with the Authority after it realised that one sentence was omitted from its initial press release, saying that sentence was its response to an opposition MP's allegations.

The Office says what actions the management have taken to remedy the government's complaints is up to the management and the president has nothing to do with that.

Mr Bauro was suspended for disobeying management.
