Indonesia President due at PIDF in Fiji

4:38 pm on 28 May 2014

The Indonesian President will visit Fiji next month for the second annual Pacific Islands Development Forum in Nadi.

The meeting, which will focus on sustainable development, follows last year's establishment of the Forum and the setting up of a secretariat in Suva.

Fiji has said the new forum is not designed to compete with the long-standing Pacific Islands Forum, from which Fiji has been suspended since 2009.

The Fiji leader, Rear Admiral Frank Bainimarama, says Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's visit shows the relevance of the Development Forum in the region.

Member countries of the forum are Fiji, Nauru, Marshall Islands, Tuvalu, Vanuatu, Solomon Islands, Cook Islands, New Caledonia, Tonga, French Polynesia, Kiribati, Papua New Guinea and the Federated States of Micronesia.

Earlier this month the first deputy prime minister and foreign minister of Kuwait confirmed they would also attend this year's forum, held from June the 18th to 20th.
