Morrison to blame for PNG violence says Senator

An Australian Senator, Sarah Hanson-Young, has accused the Immigration Minister of blaming the victims for the violence at Australia's asylum seeker camp on Manus Island in Papua New Guinea.

Scott Morrison says the violence would not have occurred if the asylum seekers had not been protesting.

She says Mr Morrison is deceitfully using a report into the violence, which left one man dead and dozens hurt, to whitewash himself and his staff.

Ms Hanson Young says the responsibility for the death of Reza Berati clearly lies at Mr Morrison's feet.

"This young man brutally beaten to death inside an immigration detention centre, at the hands of people employed and paid for by the Australian Government, and all we get from Minister Morrison is pointing the finger of blame at everybody but himself and his own department."
