China's ambassador to Fiji has been the first diplomatic visitor to the new Pacific Islands Development Forum office in Suva.

Huang Yong met with Feleti Teo late last week at the PIDF secretariat office, which was opened in April.

China sponsored the inaugural meeting of the PIDF in August last year.

The second summit of the new grouping is scheduled for June the 18th to 20th this year in Nadi, and the secretariat says it will focus on "green growth in the Pacific" and sustainability.

Ambassador Yong says China will support the PIDF regarding strategies and multi-stakeholder governance structures, and will attend this year's summit.

The Fiji government has said the new forum is not meant to challenge the long-standing Pacific Islands Forum, but also says it is not interested in re-joining the PIF if Australia and New Zealand remain as both donors and member countries.
