Renewed call for Fiji AG to quit

7:01 pm on 9 May 2014

The Fiji Labour Party has again called for the elections minister, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, to resign, saying he is deliberately misleading the people of Fiji.

Political parties had strongly criticised the fact that while being the minister in charge of elections, Mr Sayed-Khaiyum has this week been chosen as the general secretary of the regime leader's proposed political party.

Mr Sayed Khaiyum, who is also the attorney general, has described the resignation calls as gutter politics and a circus side show.

He says as in previous governments, ministers have been responsible for the Election Office.

But the Labour leader, Mahendra Chaudhry, says in the past, electoral institutions had complete autonomy, were independent and responsible to parliament.

He alleges that Mr Sayed-Khaiyum has already interfered with the electoral process and by continuing to be a Fiji First Party official, he will keep abusing his ministerial office.

Mr Chaudhry says raising this is not gutter politics but a serious national issue regarding the credibility of the September election.
