Seven men arrested in Vanuatu for gang rape

7:53 pm on 6 May 2014

Seven alleged rapists in Vanuatu have been arrested for the gang rape of a 28-year-old woman last week.

The incident took place in Tanna and all seven men have now been flown to Port Vila where they are remanded in the Correctional centre.

The Vanuatu Independent reports the young mother of two is married but her husband had left the family two weeks before the attack to find work in Port Vila.

An increase in sexual offences in Vanuatu this year has seen rape on the rise.

More than half of the criminal cases dealt with by Vanuatu's Supreme Court in March, were serious rape cases.

The state prosecution says the alleged gang rape is likely to spur serious debate again on sexual violence in the country.
