Mataniko Bridge in Solomons to close for repairs

8:53 am on 3 May 2014

A key bridge in Solomon Island's capital will be closed this weekend for repair work following damage caused by last month's flash floods.

The Ministry of Infrastructure Development says a ramp will be removed on Saturday night during the repair of Mataniko Bridge.

The Deputy Director of the Transport Sector Development Unit, Jabin Laedola, says a downstream ramp will remain open for emergency services.

The Ministry is liaising with the Police to ensure the bridge is off limits to vehicles and pedestrians.

An older bridge over the Mataniko was swept away in the floods.

It is to be replaced by a temporary Bailey bridge being sent from New Zealand.
