A strong but deep 6.7-magnitude earthquake was felt off the Loyalty Islands in New Caledonia but no tsunami alert was issued.

The US Geological Survey says the quake struck 397 km east-northeast of the New Caledonia capital Noumea on Thursday at a depth of 117km.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre says a destructive tsunami was not generated because the earthquake was deep.
