Samoa call to discharge ministers

2:12 pm on 25 April 2014

Lawyers representing Samoa's deputy prime minister, Fonotoe Nuafesili Pierre Lauofo, and the associate minister Muagututagata Peter Ah Him, have asked the judge to discharge the two without convictions.

Earlier this month, the two were found guilty of obstructing police while they tried to carry out a blood-alcohol test last year - offences that can be punished with prison.

The defence lawyers have told the court that if they are convicted their reputations as MPs and cabinet ministers will be affected.

Sentencing is scheduled for May the 13th.
