Refugees face disqualification if they refuse PNG resettlement

2:02 pm on 23 April 2014

Asylum seekers who refuse to be resettled in Papua New Guinea from Australia's detention centre on Manus Island will automatically be disqualified from the refugee process, according to a PNG news website.

PNG Edge reports government officials are working closely with an expert panel to draw up resettlement plans, and those who refuse will remain in the detention centre and be handed back to the Australian government.

Australia's immigration minister, Scott Morrison, has ruled out any resettlement in Australia.

According to the report, the PNG government is anticipating the first group of refugees will be resettled in June, and is currently trying to find provinces to host them.
