Australian minister urged to release Manus riot report

3:27 pm on 22 April 2014

The Australian Greens are calling on the Immigration minister, Scott Morrison, to release an interim report into last February's clashes at the Manus Island detention centre which killed an Iranian asylum seeker, Reza Berati.

A video has been released by Fairfax media in Australia, that shows guards employed by security firm G4S attacking asylum seekers the night before Mr Berati's death.

A Greens Senator, Sarah Hanson-Young, says the report into the violence has been sitting on Mr Morrison's desk for weeks, and that the Australian government is desperate to cover up an incident on its watch.

She says the footage puts into question the government's actions just hours before the deadly attacks and raises further doubt over why the minister initially blamed asylum seekers for the attacks.

Ms Hanson-Young has launched a Senate inquiry into the events surrounding Mr Berati's death.
