12:29 pm on 18 April 2014

The president of the American Samoa Senate has paid tribute to the territory's ancestors and business sector in his Flag Day address.

American Samoa today marks 114 years since becoming a United States territory.

This year's Flag Day celebration has been dedicated to the private sector under the theme "Government and Businesses in Partnership".

Speaking to a crowd of more than 3,000, Gaoteote Tofau Palaie says the private sector has played a major role in the territory's economic development over the last 113 years.

"To every single business enterprise in our territory, whether you employ two or 100 employees, we thank you for promoting our economy. We are here to celebrate the inalienable rights that we enjoy today: freedom, justice and liberty."
