Fiji Reserve Bank warns of identity theft through emails

7:25 pm on 17 April 2014

The Fiji Reserve Bank is warning businesses buying supplies overseas through the internet to be extremely cautious.

The director of the Bank's Financial Intelligence Unit, Razim Buksh, says they have been made aware of business entities which have fallen victim to email spoofing and identity theft.

He says cases reported to them show emails sent between the local businesses and their overseas suppliers were intercepted by cybercriminals, who have managed to access the email address of the overseas supplier.

Mr Buksh says the hackers then ask the customer to redirect payment to another bank account and he says if that happens the business should immediately become suspicious.
