A leaked document on a proposed airport development in Vanuatu says it could increase passenger numbers through the country by more than two million a year.

The pre-feasibility document, leaked to the Daily Post, outlines the forecast growth the airport in South Efate could generate.

The Daily Post reports passenger numbers could increase from 400,000 last year to 2.7 million by 2025.

It reports the development could open Vanuatu up to five major Asian centres and require a total loan of 165 million US dollars.

Our correspondent, Len Garae, says it should be worth the money.

"The government is doing all that it can to make sure that it achieves what it wants to see. It has to convince the people and the people are with the government in this regard because tourism is the most promising sector."
