Vanuatu parliamentary sitting cancelled

1:09 pm on 11 April 2014

A sitting of Vanuatu's parliament planned for today has been deferred amid a threat by the opposition to boycott it.

The opposition has strong objections to the government's way of dealing with a new airport project.

The government has been in talks with a Singaporean company to build a new international airport on Efate and modernise others around the country.

A opposition spokesperson says the committee set up to vet the plans has not seen any proposal documents about the airport.

The spokesperson says because the documents are not ready, parliament cannot sit to discuss them today, and he opposition will reserve its boycott for when the documents are ready.
