A sea turtle tagged and released in French Polynesia nearly a year ago has now swum more than 10,000 kilometres.

The turtle, which has been named Ariti, went as far as the Federated States of Micronesia and has now crossed back into the South Pacific near Kiribati.

Swimming an average of 32 kilometres a day, the turtle went past the Cook Islands and Niue to spend time in the Fiji archipelago before heading north.

The turtle has satellite transponders on its shell and is being monitored by the French Polynesian government.
