Four inmates escape from New Caledonia prison

12:59 pm on 8 April 2014

Police in New Caledonia are on the hunt for four convicted burglars who escaped from the territory's Camp Est jail.

Police say the escape by the four men, who are in their 20s, was well planned as they managed to break through a door and use sheets to scale the walls.

A search with a helicopter of the prison area as well as road blocks have failed to recapture them.

It was the first escape since November 2012 from the jail which is among the most overcrowded prisons run by France.
