Fiji NGO wants explanation about alleged lies in booklet

The Citizens Constitutional Forum in Fiji says it wants an explanation from the Attorney General on why CCF has been asked to withdraw its booklet on the constitution.

The Attorney General, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, told Fiji media it is asking CCF to withdraw the booklet, saying it contains a number of factual errors relating to land, the judiciary and immunity clauses.

But the Forum's head, the Reverend Akuila Yabaki, says it has received no official word from the Attorney General and has not been told what the alleged lies are.

He says the 10,000 copies published will continue to be distributed throughout Fiji.

"He has not contacted us. Our team will continue to go out to towns and islands, villages, to do their work, particularly important, critical at this time, as we head towards elections hopefully in September 2014. The booklet is a summary of the main parts of the constitution, we are working indeed constructively alongside government."

The Reverend Akuila Yabaki says the booklet is funded by AusAid, the European Union and a German Catholic organisation.
