Tsunami alert for Eastern Pacific

3:34 pm on 2 April 2014

A magnitude 8.2 earthquake has struck off the north of Chile, sparking a tsunami warning for South and Central America's Pacific coast.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre says a tsunami measuring almost two metres has been generated.

The quake struck about 100 kilometres northwest of Iquique, near Peru.

The US Geological Survey says the first quake was very shallow, at just 10 kilometres below the seabed.

It has been followed by two major aftershocks.

Countries in the Central and South Pacific have not been issued with tsunami warnings.
