Concerns about election supervisor appointment - CCF

9:35 am on 1 April 2014

The Citizens Constitutional Forum in Fiji says the newly-appointed supervisor of elections, Mohammed Saneem, may not be qualified for the role.

Mr Saneem has taken up the position after resigning as acting Permanent Secretary for Justice.

The Attorney General, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, has said 13 applications were received for the role, with 3 Fijians and 10 foreigners applying but none meeting the set criteria.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum has conceded that Mr Saneem was the second choice, after a senior consultant from Australia, Laurie McGrath, was unable to take over the post.

The head of CCF, Akuila Yabaki, says Mr Saneem may not meet the criteria needed for the role.

"We wonder if the gentleman has met all the critera for selection to this important post. And I refer in particular to years of experience and conditions which will ensure independence and credibility of performance in order for Mr Saneem to satisfy conditions required by international standards."
