PNG police investigate escape and shooting

7:49 am on 31 March 2014

The police in Papua New Guinea are launching an investigation into two separate incidents, involving an escape from Madang police cells and a suspected police shooting of a citizen.

The Commissioner of Police Toami Kulunga says the escape last week could be consequential of police negligence, or poor lock-up facilities which could require maintanence.

A police spokesperson, Dominic Kakas, says in a separate incident, the police are also seriously concerned about media reports that police harrassed and shot at a citizen five times at a Mt Hagen road block.

"It's very serious. That's why the Commissioner's demanded an immediate investigation to establish what has happened. We will take action both criminally and disciplinary."

Dominic Kakas says more information will be available after a police briefing.
