The Supreme Court in Papua New Guinea is this week expected to hear the government's appeal against an inquiry into Australia's asylum seeker detention centre on Manus Island.
The Inquiry, by Justice David Cannings, was halted on Saturday after the government accused Justice Cannings' of being biased against the controversial refugee processing deal between PNG and Australia.

"David Cannings was investigating whether asylum seekers' basic human rights are being met on Manus, and last week brought a team of lawyers, journalists and health professionals into the centre to examine conditions inside. The government then appealed to the Supreme Court, who on Saturday ordered that the inquiry be adjourned. But in an unusual twist, Justice Cannings immediately launched another inquiry and granted an Australian barrister, Jay Williams, access to the centre to interview detainees he's representing. The second inquiry continues, while the appeal against the first will be heard in the Supreme Court on Wednesday where a decision on whether it can continue will be made."
