Cyclone Mike downgraded

2:55 pm on 20 March 2014

A cyclone which developed over the Cook Islands has been downgraded as it moves south towards New Zealand.

Former Tropical Cyclone Mike was a category one when it had winds of 35 knots close to the centre, and momentary gusts of 50 knots.

The New Zealand Met Service says the low is weakening as it moves south and it is not expected to affect New Zealand.

A spokesperson says it is currently south of the Southern Cook Islands and has gale force winds at its centre.
