Call for talks on American Samoa congressman

4:26 pm on 18 March 2014

An American Samoa senator Galea'i Tu'ufuli is calling for discussion on the status of American Samoa's representative in the US congress.

The senator quoted reports saying Faleomavaega Eni Hunkin has not been seen on Capitol Hill even though a press statement from his office two weeks ago said that he was returning to the American capital.

The congressman has been unwell since October last year but his office has not released any details of his illness.

Galea'i Tu'ufuli says according to reports the congressman has been missing from two hearings of the House committee dealing with Pacific affairs and questions have been raised about his absence.

The Manu'a senator says no one is unaware of Faleomavaega'a long service for the territory but he says the seat the congressman holds was not created for one person but belongs to the whole territory.

He says Fono leaders should meet with the governor Lolo Matalasi Moliga to discuss the congressman's situation.
