Niue government refuses to answer questions over grant

7:34 pm on 13 March 2014

The Niue government is refusing to answer anymore questions about the approval of a grant to the son of an MP, whose home was burnt down.

In May 2011 Martin Matakapea's home in Hikutavake was destroyed in an arson attack on the night of the general election.

Bridget Tunnicliffe reports:

"Martin Matakapea is the son of local MP Opili Talafasi. Last week the secretary to the government Richard Hipa confirmed the government approved an US$85,000 grant to Martin Matakapea to go towards building a new home for his family. But one villager who wishes to remain anonymous says when other homes and buildings in Hikutavake were destroyed in arson attacks later that year, those owners weren't given any compensation. People in the village say Martin Matakapea is still without a home and want to know where the money has gone. Richard Hipa today told Radio New Zealand International that they won't answer any further questions on the matter."
