CNMI governor may not back Saipan casino decision

4:50 pm on 6 March 2014

There's no guarantee that the Northern Marianas governor, Eloy Inos, will sign a bill legalising casino operations on Saipan even though he has previously supported the measure.

His press secretary, Angel Demapan, says he is not sure if the governor will sign the bill, especially because it has a number of changes from the previous versions.

Both the House and Senate have passed the bill which would require a minimum investment of 2 billion US dollars inclusive of the casino, hotel, and other tourism-related businesses, but sets no timeline for this.

Mr Demapan says the bill is monumental and could change the course of the economy, the government, and the lives of the people.
