The Fiji government says it is deploying extra resources in hospitals and clinics to combat the dengue fever outbreak.

The health ministry has set up a task force including international health agencies to monitor the spread of the virus.

The government says there are 2,589 confirmed cases mostly in the country's Central Division.

The government is also continuing its efforts spraying insecticide especially in Suva.

A doctor at Nadi Hospital has told Radio New Zealand International every bed is taken and people are having to line up for hours outside Accident and Emergency to be seen by medical staff.

The doctor who did not wish to be named says some staff members have also suffered from dengue fever, which has put extra pressure on the hospital.
