Sport: Samoa 7s coach backs players to respond

Samoa sevens coach Viliamu Punivalu is backing his squad to recover from a disappointing weekend in Wellington.

Samoa lost three of five matches last weekend before being knocked out by Canada in the Plate semi finals.

Injuries hampered their efforts with Tom Iosefo ruled-out mid-week and a handful of other players struck down during the tournament.

Viliamu Punivalu says he would like to give the squad from Wellington a chance to make amends but for many the first challenge is getting their bodies right.

"We have to reassess Reupena [Levasa], Tulolo [Tulolo], Fomai [Ah Ki] and Lio Lolo. We have at least about five injuries that we have to look at but I would like to keep the core of the team here in Vegas and Wellington because it's pretty much the same team that made the semi finals in South Africa, only two changes. But if injuries persist I might have to look at a few changes in place".

The World Sevens Series resumes in Japan in five weeks time.
