China extends cyclone aid to Tonga

China has given Tonga 600,000 US dollars in disaster relief to help with the aftermath of last month's cyclone which caused massive destruction in the Ha'apai group of islands.

The assistance was given in a ceremony in Nuku'alofa attended by China's ambassador, Huang Huaguang, and the prime minister, Lord Tu'ivakano.

The prime minister says Tonga is extremely thankful for the tremendous assistance.

Cyclone Ian caused vast devastation, displacing more than 5,000 people and destroying over 800 homes.
